Swedish government has been paying much attention to the cooperation with China in the R&D of the next generation mobile communication. During recent years, Swedish Ministry of Education and MOST of China have a series of discussion on the Sino-Swedish cooperation. Supported by both governments, the Sino-Swedish Workshop on the Next Generation Mobile Communication was held in March of 2006 in Beijing. On February 5th of 2007, VINNOVA and SSF paid a visit to MOST, during which the both sides reached certain consensus on the strategic cooperation on the R&D of the next generation wireless communication and networks. Supported by the leaders from Department of International Cooperation and Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization from MOST, the joint promoting expert group was set up on the workshop, charged by Prof. You Xiaohu from SEU, Prof. Chen Shanzhi from Datang, Prof. Ulf Korner from Lund University, and Prof. Viktorsson from Ericsson. In June of 2007, invited by VINNOVA and SSF, over 20 officials and experts from China paid a visit to Sweden, during which the both sides defined the detailed contents for the cooperation on the R&D of the next generation mobile communication technologies.

During the 2nd Sino-Swedish Science Week in September of 2007, MOST of China, VINNOVA and SSF of Sweden signed the cooperative memorandum, according to which China and Sweden agreed to fund the joint "IMT-Advanced and 4G technology" R&D program. Over 50 Chinese and Swedish experts attend the technical seminar and reached wide consensus on the research objectives, contents and cooperative manners. Universities and enterprises representing the highest research level of China and Sweden, such as Tsinghua University, Southeast University, BUPT, Datang Telecom from China and Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University, Uppsala University and Ericsson from Sweden are expected to join the cooperative R&D program.
