Mobile communications have had a very rapid development in China recently, with the total number of subscribers up to 450 millions in 2006. Chinese government paid a lot of attention in supporting R&D activities in China, including the development of the TD-SCDMA standard and beyond 3G researches in the past decade. From late ninth five period, MOST, together with the former MII and NDRC, organized and implemented the R&D of the 3G mobile communication system, completed TD-SCDMA standardization, developed commercial system, and built up a relatively intact industrial chain and supporting system, while the domestic enterprises and research institutes kept strengthening their R&D capability, industrial application performance and international competitiveness. During the tenth five-year plan, MOST defined the R&D of the next generation mobile communication systems as one of the significant programs in the National 863 Plan, organized and implemented FuTURE 4G mobile communication project, established the most advanced 4G wireless communication outfield trial system and testing environment, and submitted a series of standard proposals to certain domestic and international standardization organizations.
Sweden has been leading the world in the R&D of mobile communication technologies, with the most influential mobile communication enterprises such as Ericsson which enjoys a relatively large 2G market share, leads the R&D of 3G mobile communication technologies, and plays an important role in the future development of the next generation broadband mobile communication. Many Swedish universities such as Royal Institute of Technology all have a long standing reputation in the R&D of mobile communication and radio frequency identification technologies.
Having been attaching great importance to the industrial and academic cooperation with China, Ericsson set up many joint enterprises in Beijing, Nanjing and other cities, and has been conducting long-term technical cooperation with some Chinese universities and research institutes such as BUPT, BJPU, and SHRCWC. Ericsson is also one of the founder members of FuTURE FORUM, making remarkable contributions to the development of the next generation mobile communication in China and all over the world.
The next generation broadband mobile communication program has been listed as one of the 16 significant programs in China's medium-and-long-term scientific and technological development during which the international cooperation is an indispensable tache. China is planning to seize the new opportunity to conduct pre-competition strategic international cooperation with those leading countries such as Sweden on IMT-Advanced and beyond wireless communication technologies so as to gradually enhance China's innovation ability, to alter the situation that the developed countries dominated the development of mobile communication technologies, to form a new order for the international mobile communication development and to make China one of the leading role in the future development of wirless mobile communication technologies and industry.
