Mobile communications is of crucial importance for the development of our society. During the next couple of years, the 3G-systems are to be enhanced with upgrades that will give even higher bitrates but also lower delays. International Mobile Communications - Advanced (IMT-Advanced) is a concept from the ITU for mobile communication systems with capabilities which go further than that of IMT-2000. IMT-Advanced was previously known as "Systems Beyond IMT-2000". We envision that "IMT Advanced" technologies will be introduced about 8 years from now. The new capabilities of these IMT-Advanced systems are envisioned to handle a wide range of supported data rates with target peak data rates of up to approximately 100 Mbps for high mobility such as mobile access and up to say 1 Gbps for low mobility such as nomadic/local wireless access.
Since the demand for broadband wireless data services would be rapidly increased in the upcoming 10 years, the main challenge of the future mobile communications system beyond IMT Advanced would come from the huge volume of data transmission over a limited useable amount of radio frequencies. Utilization of higher frequency band will for sure take place, and an efficient distribution of the radio power over the coverage area should be carefully investigated by introducing a new radio transmission and network architecture. In addition, advanced intelligent technologies should be exploited for network maintenance and service provisioning in order to keep simplicity for end mobile users. Network optimization will be carried out related to space, time and frequency while the complexity is greatly increased. The more advanced self-managed, self-optimized and Pluggable systematic technologise will bring novel changes to the connotation and application of the next generation mobile communication.
