February 18 of 2010, GSMA was closed in Barcelona in Spain, which was attended by more than 1300 enterprises and about 50 thousands representatives. During the 4-day meeting, the senior managers from the global major operators and communication manufacturers came together to discuss the development trend of mobile communication industry. Relative technologies such as HSPA, HSPA+ and LTE were widely accepted and supported, while the manufacturers also demonstrated the latest mobile products and solutions.
It is a pity that TD and TD LTE were not fully displayed as China Mobile absented from the meeting. Most TD manufacturers absented from GSMA 2010, and the relative attendees also didn¡¯t lay stress on TD technologies. On the previous meetings, China Mobile usually made sharp appearances, holding a supportive attitude on the integration of LTE TDD and LTE FDD while promoting TD/LTE TDD technologies. The absence of China Mobile revealed that they have altered the LTE development strategy. LTE will be greatly developed in 2010. China Mobile used to emphasize repeatedly that TD LTE should be an international technical standard instead of being possessed by some particular countries though China holds much independent IPR on TD LTE technologies. The internationalization of the current TD LTE can actually be marketized, so there are a considerable number of developed and developing countries are watching, China Mobile will lay the world's first TD LTE trial networks at Shanghai World Expo 2010 site, while Qualcomm chips, and other mainstream vendors have begun to put tape-TDD LTE chips into operation gradually, and then the success of the pilot network will be the references for many operators to make their choices. With China Mobile and some relative equipment maker's long-term advocacy on TD technologies, TD, and TD LTE has been popularized globally, while the most important thing now is to come up with mature products and successful experience. Whether TD and TDD LTE can be well developed in the future successfully does not simply depend on the level of development in China. What is more important is to promote TD and TDD LTE to the full-fledged international industrial chain.
TD technology with TDD LTE evolution is more attractive, because it shows that the TD is a mature and promising technology. Developed countries generally will focus on TDD LTE, while developing countries, limited by cost, frequency and other factors will be more interested in TD network. The TD network operated by China Mobile have overcome a series of difficulties and ushered the development peak, but the TDD LTE trial networks still need to undergo a number of challenges, because the TDD LTE terminals are restricted by chip commercialization schedules. No chip manufacturers can commit easily to be able to come up with mature and stable commercial TDD LTE chips before the Shanghai Expo. The opportunities and challenges co-exist currently. If the TDD LTE trial network succeeded, TDD LTE is bound to lead the TD networks to a brighter future.
