Since the issuance of 3G licenses in China, China Mobile has completed three-phase construction of TD-SCDMA systems during one and a half year, while the bid for the fourth-phase construction has started already, from which we can see that the operators have begun to plan for the next generation network evolution while optimizing the 3G network coverage and that the support from equipment manufacturers will become an important and influential factor.
TD-LTE has achieved breakthrough progresses since this year. The first TD-LTE trial network that was put into operation in EXPO Park enables the users to experience various TD-LTE featured services and applications including mobile HD video monitoring, HD video meeting, HD live broadcasting and extreme Internet surfing. Meanwhile, the manufacturers who join the off-site testing organized by MIIT also have a high-quality performance. According to the plan, the large-scale off-site testing will be conducted and the pilot TD-LTE network will be deployed from the end of this year to early 2011. Currently supported by many mainstream manufacturers, China Mobile recently released a series of TD-LTE terminal products. The improvement and development of terminal products will be helpful to overcome those bottleneck problems that TD networks used to face during its development.
As the standard technology for TD network to evolve into 4G system, the ultimate route of TD-LTE will depend on the scaled application of TD networks which will provide valuable network optimization experience and user resources for TD-LTE systems. Besides, both adopting time-division multiplexing system, TD and TD-LTE have many similarities in spectrum allocation and service applications so that the development of TD networks will explore an adequate commercial mode for TD-LTE systems. In addition, the internationalization of TD and TD-LTE should also be stressed. Though TD-LTE is currently supported by some international manufacturers such as Qualcomm and NSN, FDD system is still inferior in internationalization. The successful commercialization of TD-SCDMA networks will help to promote the international TD-LTE industrial chain and attract more supports from excellent operators and manufacturers, which will definitely lead to the real strategic significance of the general innovation of Chinese manufacturers through the technologies with independent IP patents.
