Workshop on IMT-Advanced Technology
and Development in Shanghai

April 24, 2008, Workshop on IMT-Advanced Technology and Development, organized by FuTURE FORUM and assisted by SHRCWC, NOKIA and NSN, was held in Shanghai Everbright International Hotel, attended by over 50 representatives from various enterprises, universities and research institutes.

The workshop was presided by Prof. You Xiaohu, Vice Chairman of FuTURE FORUM and Dr. Wang Haifeng from NOKIA, on which 14 experts gave excellent speeches on IMT-Advanced related issues and conducted quite meaningful discussions. ?Prof. You Xiaohu first reported on the evolution of the next generation mobile communication network and introduced that quite a number of consensus had been reached with the rapid development of IMT-A technical requirements, wide application of OFDM-MIMO technology, physical layer research on LTE, WiMAX, and UWB so that the current researches mainly focus on multi-user and multi-cell technologies such as relay-based and distributed antenna technology, optimal and adaptive wireless network technology and multi-band coordinating technology which will bring a breakthrough in the improvement of wireless network communication performance. Subsequently, Prof. Joseph Cavallaro from RICE University of USA introduced their performance and progresses and specially explained the cross-layer coordination in the future network and the research concept and technical application of opportunistic communication.

In addition, Dr. Xu Xiaodong presented the initiative plan and corresponding R&D strategies of China Mobile concerning the development and standardization of LTE-Advanced technology; Dr. Zhang Xiaojing reviewed the ten-year evolution of Huawei from a participant to an important role during the R&D of IMT-A technology before introducing Huawei’s future plan; Dr. Wan Lei reported on Ericsson’s R&D of carrier frequency integration, expanded multi-antenna transmission, relay-based optimal and adaptive network during the technical evolution from LTE to IMT-A; Dr. Chen Lan introduced DoCoMo’s concept and effort for developing IMT-Advanced technology. Other presenters include Mr. Jussi Kahtava from NOKIA, Dr. Yang Jin from Motorola, Mr. Zhao Jian from Datang Mobile, Prof. Markku Juntti from Oulu University of Finland, Mr. Liu Jian from HUST, Mr. Hu Wei from Potevio, Mr. Zhang Xiaodong from Spreadtrum and Ms. Zhua Yuxia from Fiberhome.

Though tight in schedule, the workshop offered a relaxing environment for the enterprises and research institutes to share their own progresses and achievements and successfully concluded by many valuable and suggestive issues and advice proposed concerning the development of IMT-Advanced technology.
