Workshop on Hot 3G/B3G Technology and Development Tendency

ITU will start to recruit IMT-Advanced (4G) technical standards in 2008 and will begin the standardization in 2010, before which various technologies are being actively developed. In order to discuss the vantages and disadvantages of various hot 3G/B3G technologies and to study the relevant development tendency, FuTURE FORUM held the Workshop on Hot 3G/B3G Technology and Development Tendency at Beijing Xiyuan Hotel on the afternoon of December 21st of 2007.

Experts from Datang Mobile, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, ZTE, Samsung and UESTC respectively made specialized speeches at the workshop expatiating their understanding of the tendency of the technical development.

The representative from Datang Mobile introduced the features and vantages of 3GPP LTE/TDD technologies, and the strategies of the smooth evolution from LTE/TDD to IMT-Advanced. The expert from Huawei made a speech analyzing the development tendency of LTE/TDD technology from the industrial aspect and advocating joint cooperation as necessary for the further development of LTE/TDD technology. ZTE made an all-around introduction on the evolution of TD-SCDMA technology while taking LTE as the base of TD-SCDMA and LTE (+) as what TD-SCDMA will evolve into. Ericsson analyzed the technical requirement on IMT-Advanced specifying that it is a key problem to make flexible exploitation of scattered spectrum resources as IMT possesses no proprietary spectrum. The expert from Intel stated in his speech that it is the killer application rooted from the Internet services that can determine the success of certain technology in the future. The representative from Samsung addressed in his speech that the convergence among various technical systems is the tendency for the development of TDD technology. The expert from UESTC put forward certain suggestions on the long-term evolution of TD-SCDMA technology from the aspect of mobile communication existence and sustainable development.

Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, Director of Department of Science and Technology, MII, attended the workshop and made a summary speech, in which he stressed that ITU had set up quite tight a schedule for the standard recruitment and suggested that FuTURE FORUM, as a platform for technical exchanges, should take in various opinions with preference and explore the most optimized way for the development of 3G/B3G technology.
